More about Art Journaling

Starting on Friday evening you’ll begin your Adventures in Art Journaling with an introduction from Jo, and then get relaxed and focused for a weekend of drawing and creative discovery with a colourful and fun warm-up exercise.

Throughout the weekend you’ll explore a range of creative approaches and different ways to making journal pages, including maps and mapping to reflect on and capture a walk or journey, breaking things down to visually tell the story of a place or location, and drawing what you love! We’ll take inspiration from Hawkwood itself, inside and out, favourite and found objects, and from moments experienced during the weekend.

Jo will come with masses of examples, step-by-step guidance and demonstrations to inspire and support you. There’ll be plenty of time for you to create your own amazing journal pages each day.

With fun warm-up activities, drawing techniques and tips, themed drawing sessions, and ideas for using creative lettering, by the end of the weekend you’ll be thinking of all kinds of creative ways to draw and capture moments in your journal.

Bring sketchbooks or current journals to share and show others, if you’d like to. Jo will bring all her ‘drawing diaries’ and sketchbooks along with books that she’s gained inspiration from over recent years. This retreat is suitable for beginners or anyone wanting to boost their drawing skills or creativity.

Practical Information

Check in is from 4pm, with the first group activity being dinner as a group at 6:30pm.

Please bring outdoor wear as you may spend elements of the course outside.

“I have absolutely loved Jo’s course. Starting out as someone who didn’t think they could draw particularly, it has given me so much confidence, offering ways in to drawing and ways of seeing and interpreting what is around us. Brilliant!”

Portraiture

Portraiture

2nd November 2024

Why are we, humans, drawn to represent ourselves in image? Humanoid figures are amongst some of the earliest surviving forms of art, so a desire to capture likeness or a portrayal of people is nothing new but how should you go about learning to do just that? A foundational knowledge of drawing is important to all artists, even if your interests lie in abstract or graphical art. A fundamental understanding of anatomy in portraiture will improve your interpretation of the human body and make the process of capturing it on paper easier and more expressive.
