More about Painting and Alchemy

This course aims to explore new ways of visualising what alchemy has to offer in our contemporary world, and to allow the art historical and symbolic aspects to provide unexpected springboards for the new.

Symbolic alchemy, also known as the ‘Great Work’ of transformation, presents enigmatic and fearless visions of symbolic deaths and resurrections. The surreal procedures and balancing acts lead ultimately to an integration of the complementary forces of light and dark, female and male.

The transformative ‘Work’ culminates in the emergence of vital healing and redemption for an individual, but also for humanity on a greater scale. It rehabilitates the individual and the world as ‘divine matter’ and rejuvenated ’gold’ of the sun. Strikingly contemporary, and contrary to most Western religious models, alchemy maintains an equality of spirit and matter, woman and man, body and soul; and demands, in a political sense, the fusion of power and service.

You will be introduced to Renaissance illuminations and prints from Splendor Solis, Aurora Consurgens and Atalanta Fugiens, followed by time for painting, meditation and discussion.

You are invited to work alchemically by merging the materiality of paint with the transformative input of thinking, feeling and unconscious elements.

Painting and Alchemy is for artists of all levels of experience who feel a call to explore and work with alchemical ideas and visuals.

'The course closely relates to my own practice as a painter, and I am passionate about supporting individual (not pre-conceived) approaches to painting.' - Marius von Brasch

Practical Information

Because of the course’s short duration and emphasis on experimentation, we will work with acrylics, wax pastel and crayons on paper. All quality materials are included (also brushes; however, if you wish to bring your favourite acrylic brushes, please do so).

Rest and Restore Retreat Weekend

Rest and Restore Retreat Weekend

21st November 2025 - 23rd November 2025

As we move towards darker days, it is the perfect time for us to drift and dream our way into the season of winter, and to accept all that we must let go of. Drawing on the yogic philosophical concept of abhinivesha (the fear of death and the will to live), and with an emphasis on restorative yoga and yoga nidra, we will explore the time of surrender, and the peace that comes from doing so.

Japanese Woodblock Printing

Japanese Woodblock Printing

5th September 2025 - 7th September 2025

This is an introduction course for Japanese woodblock printing and it is designed to be suitable for absolute beginners. The traditional Japanese prints such as Hokusai or Hiroshige's works are created in the same way. You will design your own block, carve and print. During the workshop, you will learn how to create the registration mark, how to use tools and how to use Baren (printing tool) to make a print.

Portraiture

Portraiture

13th September 2025

Why are we, humans, drawn to represent ourselves in image? Humanoid figures are amongst some of the earliest surviving forms of art, so a desire to capture likeness or a portrayal of people is nothing new but how should you go about learning to do just that? A foundational knowledge of drawing is important to all artists, even if your interests lie in abstract or graphical art. A fundamental understanding of anatomy in portraiture will improve your interpretation of the human body and make the process of capturing it on paper easier and more expressive.
