More about Gavin Carr Choral Weekend

Join celebrated choral maestro Gavin Carr (“Chorus Master to the Universe” - BBC Radio 3) in a Choral Weekend celebrating one of Beethoven's most under appreciated masterpieces in the repertoire: Beethoven’s beautiful Mass in C.

Originally commissioned by Prince Esterházy to continue the tradition of Masses composed by Haydn for the Esterházy court, the work was initially met with disappointment due to its dissimilarity with Haydn’s works, although Beethoven had clearly studied them and deeply revered them. It’s warmth and serenity stand it in strong contrast to the much more famous Missa Solemnis, but the Mass in C is surely one of Beethoven’s loveliest creations, making only moderate demands upon singers in achieving its deep range of emotion.

Following 2024’s joyous weekend on Haydn’s Mass in Time of War, this masterpiece is the logical next step in exploring into the less well-known corners of the classical choral repertoire. Four talented young student soloists will add lustre to the weekend, and will be workshopped by Gavin in his inimitable style.
