I am currently developing a Practice as Research project on how radiophonic language can inform theatre-making, and how Foley Art can be used in a rehearsal room for theatrical storytelling.
My opportunity at Hawkwood's Changemaker Residency was an absolute wonder—the perfect start to the year and an ideal space to concentrate on my artistic development. I spent time reading, writing, practicing Foley Art, taking long walks, and enjoying lovely food. One night, while working late by the library fireplace, inspiration struck, and I finally connected all my ideas into a cohesive whole.
Topics like Foley Art, the invention of radio, new sound-effects machinery of the 1900s, and many others came together during that residency. Hawkwood gave me the perfect setting for creative breakthroughs.
I believe Hawkwood and I have established a great artistic relationship, with many more ideas to come!
Radio has been at the centre of many households for over a century, but its best stories are hidden behind the scenes—stories about invention, inspiration, breakthroughs, and more. J. Eva Collins Alonso
Eva works in technical and backstage theatre roles in Norway, Spain, and the UK. She creates stories using Foley Art and cassettes, building unique lamps from scraps. In 2019, she was awarded DYCP by Arts Council England to explore storytelling through sound and light. She has since been part of various artist residencies and mentorship programs. Her dual heritage, with a mother from Madrid and a father from London, informs much of her creative work.
